July: The centenary Weslyan conference was opened in Sheffield.

August: The opera house in Berlin was destroyed by fire.

September: Revolution in Athens, Greece.

October: A group of leading church ministers proposed establishing 700 new Sunday Schools.

November: The statue of Lord Nelson was raised to the summit of the new column in Trafalgar Square.

December: Riots in Madrid, Spain.
